Dr. Rohit Puri is an Engineering Manager of Cloud Media Systems at Netflix. His team develops cloud-scalable services and tools for the Netflix media trans-coding pipeline, enabling ingestion and streaming of various audio, video and timed text media formats including IMF, QuickTime, MP4/DASH and W3C TTML. The team is also responsible for the Netflix media intelligence pipeline – implementing in-depth technical analyses on Netflix media assets using deep learning methods to solve challenging computer vision and natural language processing problems, as well as building out scalable media infrastructure components that orchestrate these computations and persist their inferences for use across various business workflows.
Dr. Puri received a B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, a M.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Urbana, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, all in electrical engineering.
Prior to joining Netflix, he worked at semiconductor businesses PortalPlayer and Nvidia, SaaS businesses RhythmNew Media and TenHands, as well as Sony Electronics and Cisco Systems from the systems domain, in various software development and architecture roles for video-based products and systems.
Dr. Puri was the recipient of the Eliahu I. Jury doctoral thesis award at University of California, Berkeley for outstanding achievement in systems, communications, control or signal processing research (2004). He was also a part of the Netflix team that was a recipient of the 67th Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy award titled “Standardization and Pioneering Development of Non-Live Broadcast Captioning” (2015).
